Richard Hawley

I’ve been appreciating Richard Hawley’s solo work since Nigel at the Rough Trade Shop suggested I should listen to his recordings a few years ago. His other albums ‘Richard Hawley’ and ‘Late Night Final’ are also very good. If you can hunt down my fellow Adelaidian Luke Ashby’s work he is also in a similar vein but probably better!

The most played CD of the New Year so far is ‘Profile’ by Githead which I got as a present. Colin Newman makes this sound like a great Wire album that never was.

I’m not aware of the new Pet Shop Boys album but I can tell you I’m definitely not on it. Unless they really want to commit commercial suicide I’m sure that will remain that way as well. The Death Shop Boys is but a Dream – “a horrible one” as Gen/Breyer would chip in!

However, did Neil Tennant contribute to the vocals on “One Word” by Kelly Osbourne? When I first heard this in April being played in a gay bar in Boston called ‘Paradise’ (which it was not!) that Thomas Nola had thoughtfully taken John Murphy and I to I was sure it was something to do with him and was dumb-founded when the barman said it was a Kelly Osbourne promo. A few days later a promo copy of the whole album was in my intrigued hands but it had no real information on it. Heilige! Douglas P.

Acoustic hits etc.

— Dear Ben, Upon returning to Australia after the last World tour in June, 2005 I recorded nearly 40 acoustic versions of the songs John Murphy and myself were making the DIJ sets up from.

Yes, Folks we know at least this many and can even play them – ourselves!

From these recordings at Big Sound Studios S.A. the following contributions have already been made:

Versions of ‘Come Before Christ And Murder Love’ and ‘Golden Wedding Of Sorrow’ with me simply playing the guitar and singing are featured on the ‘Behind The Mask’ documentary DVD.

Versions of ‘Death Of The West’ and ‘Rocking Horse Night’ with me simply playing the guitar and singing have also been contributed to an as yet to be announced German compilation that should be issued later this year featuring many other worthy groups for an even worthier cause.

Time will tell what I decide to do with the other songs from these recording sessions but the Live In New York DVD is really very, very good and like the DVD that accompanies the reissue of ‘The Guilty Have No Pride’CD truly shows a moment in the History of Death In June. If anyone is after a recording that captures this stripped back version of Death In June that was to be featured all over the World in DIJ’s last live performance years – this most definitely is it!

back on topic: Death In June live in Melbourne/ banned in Germany

— It was too good an opportunity to miss!

The organisers of the 2 day Cold Meat Industries’ Festival in Melbourne, Australia, as well as Roger of CMI and Brighter Death Now, invited me to perform on the second night after they met me in the audience on the first night. So,….. I did!

A different version of ‘Rose Clouds Of Holocaust’ entitled ‘Wolken Rotlich’ was performed at the very start of Sunday evening before Isomer began their set and a version of ‘Blood Of Winter’ segued into ‘Rose Clouds Of Holocaust’introduced the final show by Brighter Death Now at the end of the evening. Afteral, “Festivals End As Festivals Must”

The whole event was a pleasure to attend and in keeping with the ‘mood’ I performed the songs on ebowed guitar. It was also great to catch up again with Roger, David Tonkin, Richard Stevenson of the much missed Spectrum Magazine and, of course, Lina Baby Doll and compare notes about all the wonderfully insincere people in this crazy rock ‘n’ roll world we inhabit. Oh, how we gossipped!

It was also brilliant to be introduced to Peter Andersen of many groups and his interesting dress sense!

And, thanks also to all those who plied me with more alcohol than I’ve drunk in months.

Finally NER Mail-Order has received its copies of this release, the first album from Death In June ‘The Guilty Have No Pride’ which was originally issued in 1983. Not only is it now released with tracks from the first 12″ single issued in 1981 and the first 7″ single issued in 1982 it is also coupled with a DVD of one of DIJ’s first ever performances at The Fridge in Brixton, London early 1982. This is probably the 2nd or 3rd show the original line-up of Patrick Leagas, Tony Wakeford and myself performed together but a search through my personal archives draws a blank as to exactly when this took place so, if anyone out there knows the actual date it would be greatly appreciated.

Scotland 1983

— That’s not quite true, Tony.

Death In June performed in Aberdeen and Glasgow in late 1983. A copy of the backstage pass and ticket for the show at Nightmoves is included as some of the extra ‘goodies’ in one of the limited versions of the ‘Behind The Mask’ DVD.

The show in Edinburgh fell through.

I seem to remember it was an extremely mild November and we ended up staying at a hotel on the banks of Loch Lomond hiring a rowing boat and going out to the island in the middle of the Loch for a photo session. The owners of the hotel took great pleasure in telling us that we weren’t the only celebraties to stay with them and that the previous Winter The Queen and Spandau Ballet had been forced to take shelter together in their cosy abode during a particularly nasty blizzard.

Gary Carey of Joy Of Life might have some other memories he might want to share with the group as he was with us during this trip. Heilige! Douglas P.

— The incident certainly happened but, as we were playing in almost total darkness with strobe lights facing into the audience we couldn’t see much and thought one of us had tripped on a cable and pulled a cymbol stand over. We heard a crash and nothing else and it was only after the lights came up at the end that we found the stool on stage. No one was hurt. Except, of course, the perpetrator and someone on this list might want to elaborate on that? Or not?? I had no idea Bobby Gillespie claims to be the stool thrower who I’d always been told was a big DIJ fan. But, you should never trust a junkie, should you?

— The blue version is more likely to have ended up in a warehouse in America forgotten by the short term memory lose of the coke fiend who sent the pressing there in 1990!

However, with the reissue of Burial soon due on CD there are discussions to release this also on a picture disc LP and a version in the much talked of blue vinyl.

So, your vinyl cravings may be satisfied sooner rather than later, Per?

David Byrne/Fat Boy Slim – Live tracks I can’t get out of my head from last week’s World premier at Adelaide’s Festival of Arts of ‘Here Lies Love’ a song cycle about Imelda Marcos. Tempted as I was to call it ‘More songs about dictators and shoes’ if you liked Talking Heads you’ll love this material. The songs I keep hearing rattling around my brain are the title track, and 2 others possibly entitled ‘Agree With Me’ and ‘The Rose Of Tututuan(?)’. Worth catching if the show comes to your area. And, not one mention of a jackboot! Not that I could hear, anyway!! Heilige! Douglas P.

Re: Take Care Signed

— About 2 years ago I did a signing of several hundred copies of ‘Take Care And Control’ in Melbourne and this is probably one of those copies. The disc itself should have a dark brown background with black figures. The NEROZ logo should be in a white box.

The original 1997 version had a light beige background and the NEROZ logo had a world serpent surrounding it. That is no longer.

The Australian version of the CD which comes in a jewel case is now the only available version. Heilige! Douglas P.

— Yes there are, but it certainly isn’t one of the priorities at present. The next book about Death In June will hopefully be a biography from Italy (there may possibly be an English translation) authored by the famous Italian journalist Aldo Chimenti. It will probably also come with a CD of studio recorded acoustic versions of many DIJ favourites done in the style people have grown accustomed to hearing at live performances over the past few years. This project has been nearly 2 years in the making but hopefully, it will be ready later this year. More news as and when. Heilige! Douglas P.

— Well, please remember the original wsd version did come out in an attractive foil-blocked slipcase so when that got caught up in the litigation in 2000, along with almost everything else, NEROZ had to keep going with the jewel case version of TCAC as there were other priorities with the non-available back catalogue. As we slowly approach the full reissue of most of the major DIJ titles we have been thinking about reinventing TCAC for its 10th anniversary next year. Scorpion Wind CD is deleted, with no plans for a reissue although I hear there are a very few copies of the vinyl left at Tesco in Germany. There are no immediate plans for the other titles you mention. Heilige! Douglas P.

Re: UK ’78/’79

— This Crisis track was originally titled “UK 77” but as we didn’t get around to recording it for the John Peel radio show until 1978 we decided to call it “UK 78” for the BBC.

After the session was broadcast 3 times in quick succession (the norm was evidently twice and then a long wait before a possible third play but Peel loved Crisis and even invited us up to Broadcasting House onto the show after the first broadcast to grunt “Hullo!” in the background which at that time only The Fall had managed to do -albeit with Mancunian accents) the arrangement with the BBC was that we could then buy the tracks from them for 100 GBPs each. This was an incredibly good deal so we bought that track and “White Youth” and issued them as a 7″ in 1979 and retitled the track to fit the year. I decided to revert to its original recording name for the “Holocaust Hymns” compilation.

A couple of years later I did the same thing with the other 2 tracks from the session; “Alienation” and “Brukwood Hospital”.

I wasn’t aware of anyone else doing this with the BBC at that time and I’ve often wondered whether or not this was the inspiration behind the Strange Fruit label which issued all of those other Peel sessions. I never knew the people behind it but they too were based in Woking and the local press/radio certainly spoke of how we got our hands on those tracks. Heilige! Douglas P.

Whilst recently wading through my archives for various bits of information I came across some of the original reviews for THE GUILTY HAVE NO PRIDE when it was first released in 1983.

In an act of shameless self advertising for this recently reissued album now on CD & DVD and that some of you might find them interesting here are a few of the reviews from 23 years ago:

“With only a handful of live appearances and a couple of intriguing singles under their belt, I never quite expected to find such a good mini-LP from Death In June. The seven tracks included are a glorious testament to their style, a powerful rhythmic assault.

Looped tapes surround the incisive beats and the subtlety of acoustic guitar triggered off by throbbing bass create a penetrating collage of sound. Brittle in parts and then counteracted by thudding patches of noise.

They never let it get out of hand either. It would have been so easy to slip into a self-indulgent, really meaningful soundscape but Death In June are totally in control: A powerhouse variation on 23 Skidoo with the precise percussion of a simplistic Joy Division.

Side 1 is merely a taster, an intriguing set of short accessible songs grafted with menace and atmosphere. And side 2,while carrying on the pattern, is an intense realisation of their music. Trumpet echoes through a hollow room buiding into an orgy of sound, well paced but unpredictable.

DIJ – The Guilty Have No Pride – original reviews part II

“Compared to most mini-albums of my acquaintance this is a real Tardis job. It all seems simple enough, 7 songs and reasonably cheap, but when you play it, it seems to last forever, which is both good and bad.

You may possibly remember Tony Wakeford ( bass & vocals) and Doug Pearce (guitar, vocals & percussion) from olden days punk band CRISIS. Well here, in far better form, they are joined by Pat Leagas (drums, vocals & trumpet) a man who refuses to have his picture taken.

Their rich sound, far harder live than on record, is not easy to catagorise as its many off-shoots being lashing tendrils of the main solid body.

Having seen them live, being extremely unsettled by their sub-military image (and scuttling away early), I did expect the same fire breathing demons that graced the stage but here, although certain moments do stun, they are subdued whilst still crackling.

Opening track Till The Living Flesh Is Burned”, shows their main facets. A bass throbs busily beneath the solid drums and guitars escalate, re-appearing with dash and verve when the tune changes its course and reflective mood, battle drums arising but the vocals indifferent. In other songs one instrument will dominate occasionally, overshadowed by the vocals and weirdest of all some strange noises incorporated into particular songs.

There’s a throttled braying sound that forms one quarter of “All Alone In Her Nirvana” (well, if that’s Nirvana…) which shifts the accessibilty and makes it a fight to appreciate. Not a big fight by any means, more a minor scuffle as it’s backed up by excellent bass which smoothes things out.

For some reasons it appears that the band deliberately allowed the timing in certain songs to slide and it grates on the ear. “State Laughter” included one of these and amidst a trumpet violation there were slurs.

If forced to pick a favourite tune it would be “Nation” with its distinctly Yankee Doodle Dandy military drumming merged into church bells. The bass reverses out rather than filling a complacent role and some stirring guitar steals the scene.

It’s followed by their grandest design “Heaven St. MkII” that has become filled out and vicious, but “Nation” entices me more because it seems inconceivable that this band are only a trio.

Considering their reputation of being a bit “dodgy” (unfounded) a casual listener might expect vile imagery leaping from every line, but it is not so. It is no different in many ways to a lot of other bands (in ideology, not sounds) and should be appreciated as such.” Mick Mercer – Melody Maker – 1983

“Former members of punk band CRISIS re-emerge as DEATH IN JUNE with an apocalyptic post-punk classic: fiercely tattooing drums, rumbling bass, snarling guitar and dark, brooding vocals build up an eerily echoing and powerful wall of sound. Allied to the uncompromisingly bleak lyrics, this provides a chilling soundtrack to our times. ” “The Guilty Have No Pride” is a journey into nihilistic forbidding territory. A laconic trip into a world of menacing drumbeats and distorted guitar riffs – where the hushed gutteral vocals of Doug Pearce threaten from every shadow. Frantic voices strain in desperation, as the music runs from one shelter to another, finding solace nowhere. The desperation is enacted through violent lyrics – “Nothing changes only gets worse, Nothing changes when you’re waiting for a hearse” and “Till the living flesh is burned” – stark off key vocals, a jangly guitar and a drumbeat which threatens to crush the whole sound into nothingness. The title track is the most disturbing of all. Slipped in between two musical onslaughts it is deceptively soft with naive tinkling bells and a hypnotic guitar chord. It lays down to the whispered words”The Guilty Have No Pride” chanted over and over again creating a somnolent, eerie dream in an intense storm of sound. After listening to “The Guilty Have No Pride” it doesn’t matter how good a record you put on afterwards, it sounds spineless, fanciful and empty. That’s the effect this band has.”

Australia is rightly tough on who it decides to let in but I apparently passed all the ‘right’ criteria and it’s nice to feel wanted. I live in the Hills.

I’m actually not into wine at present Australian, German, whatever, and prefer Martini cocktails or/and Carlsberg Elephant Beer (7.2%) which is the closest to Special Brew I can get in Oz. But, my birthday is coming up and I’m expecting a nice present or 2, hopefully accompanied by some Walker’s Cheese and Onion Crisps – yum!

Most Australian wine regardless of brand name is very good but, like all things it depends on what you’re after price-wise, taste wise, etc. Heilige! Douglas P.

— Dear Oliv, Most test pressings were normally done in batches of 3. If they weren’t right then another 3 would be pressed until any sound problems had been sorted out. The minimum number I have of any one title’s test pressing is 1 and the maximum is 6. There are a few titles that also had small runs of promotional white labels manufactured. A list will be made public over the coming months as I intend to sell some of them. Regarding acetates/lacquers/metalworks then you and a few others will probably weep: At the end of the successful litigation with wsd when I got all of those kinds of things back I binned all of them in the rubbish skip of a hotel at Heathrow Airport, London. Even the recordings Rough Trade had distributed. That part of the past had been tainted and I no longer wanted anything to do with it.It’s gone. Heilige! Douglas P.

I’m sorry Tristan, I don’t know this tape but it’s probably a mishmash of Runners From’84 material (including material that Tony Wakeford played on in 1980-81), early DIJ recordings/rehearsals and stuff Patrick Leagas did on his own, or with Richard Butler, as demos for the “NADA!” album and after both were no longer part of Death In June in 1985.

As Tony Wakeford had departed DIJ by January 1984, some months before anything for “NADA!” had been rehearsed/recorded etc the claim that he is part of anything that eventually went onto that particular album is an inaccuracy. His last recordings for Death In June were for the recently reissued “Burial” album.

Andreas Ritter.

— The last time I was given an update was that the stroke/heart attack he suffered last year has resulted in a lose of memory which has, amongst other things, effected his ability to play any instrument and the road to recovery will be a long, difficult one. A full recovery is by no means certain.

Andreas was/is a lovely young man but he was also a very heavy smoker.

Perhaps this terrible incident might make a few of you think more carefully about that particular addiction which eventually killed my father. Heilige! Douglas P.

Death In June’s ‘Brown Book’CD, the ‘Take Care And Control’ CD, ‘The World That Summer’ CD (later this year to be re-issued in a special 20th anniversary edition – watch this space for more details closer to the release date) plus the Wolf Pact material and Boyd Rice’s ‘Baptism By Fire’ CD/DVD have all been manufactured and distributed by NEROZ which is operated out of Melbourne, Australia by Chris McCarter. Some of you may be familiar with his own work in Ikon? He has run NEROZ (New European Recordings Australia) since 1997. There are more releases due soon. One of which will be an official version of ‘The Phoenix Has Risen’ CD which I am presently listening to as I write. Tony Wakeford, Patrick Leagas and myself received royalties from this recording and have decided to give the ‘thumbs up’ for an official release in a nice digipak with different artwork and nice pictures, poster etc. More news about actual release date, price etc soon. Acoustic versions for FORSETI LEBT!

— These versions are indeed from the same sessions where about 40 songs were recorded in their stripped back form. I only finished putting all the incidental percussion such as sleigh bells, wind chimes etc and mixing all of them a couple of weeks ago and am very pleased with the results. It was quite a project.

Now I’m pondering exactly how they will see the light of day. More news on that as and when but the idea at present is to release this with an accompanying book showing all the guitar tabs etc.

A perfect Yuletide gift for any young struggling guitarist needing encouragment in how to make a little go a very long way.

Alarm Agents, black propaganda etc….

I’ve been reading some reviews of late. It’s funny; It began with a short message somewhere or other on the misinformation highway (since echoed on this list)that the Death In June & Boyd Rice album ‘Alarm Agents’ wasn’t all it could be.

Certainly it was claimed that this album wasn’t anything like the “classic” collaboration albums such as ‘Music, Martinis & Misanthropy’, Scorpion Wind’s ‘Heaven Sent’ or ‘Wolf Pact’.

Since then reviewers have tended to be err on the cautious side regarding this album.

But, for the record please let me add that it is the most accomplished album symbolically, melodically and aesthetically Boyd and I have ever co-written. We’re just waiting for some of you to catch up with this fact. There is a lot to discover and none of the reviews fully have. Which is probably just as well in some ways!

When Boyd Rice And Friends ‘Music, Martinis & Misanthropy’ was released in 1990 it was met with overall disbelief. It was an album Boyd, Michael Moynihan and myself worked very hard on in both Tokyo and Denver and it has since evidently gone onto define musical terms and boundaries and, thankfully, sold tens of thousands in the process.

When Scorpion Wind’s ‘Heaven Sent’album was released in 1996 it sold appallingly despite being the follow up to ‘M,M & M’ and a collaboration between Boyd Rice, myself and John Murphy, one of the most enigmatic and talented percussionists in the world! This release still stuns me as it is truly something I could never repeat and marvel at how we wrote it in the first place. 10 years on it has only recently struggled to sell what Death In June would normally in 1 year. It is now deleted.

The release of Boyd Rice & Fiend’s ‘Wolf Pact’ album in 2001 was greeted with similar reviews that compared it poorly with previous collaborations between Boyd Rice, Albin Julius and myself. But, 5 years on it is now deemed yet another “classic”. And, indeed, it is!

As is also ‘Alarm Agents’.

Behind The Mask DVD

I thought it appropriate to mention that this documentary DVD also features New York City snow-bound video clips for the tracks ‘Satan’s Feast’, which has previously only been available on the LP version of Death In June’s 1997’s Take Care And Control album, plus exclusive stripped back acoustic versions of ‘Golden Wedding Of Sorrow’ and ‘Come Before Christ And Murder Love’.

— The original recording was done at the Jabuka Club in October, 1992 but there was an additional recording added to the 4 sided LP version recorded at, off the top of my head The Mocvara Club. The other club we have performed in is the Gjuro which is within walking distance of the city centre. Other places of immediate interest will be the Cathedral where the Falcons have their nest and the main cemetary (if you have a camera I suggest you don’t let anyone see you carrying it and be circumspect about taking photos) plus, of course, Planet Music which is in a courtyard running off of the main street Ilica which, in turn, runs off of the main square. The entrance is almost opposite a statue of a priest. Ask for Dinko and he could help you out with further explorations. The best restaurant in town was/is Tito’s old favourite which is called something like Splendid in English – although it is a bit out of the city but worth the taxi fare. I frequently dine there and have come up with a lot if ideas for projects in that place which is also open very late. Dinko will probably let you know where that is – or any cab driver. Enjoy! DEATH IN JUNE ‘Burial’

The final release from the band that rose from the ashes of the mighty CRISIS, this package is a half-live, half studio job that showcase the Death In June that was treading the boards before they decided to start anew. The live side was recorded at the Hammersmith Clarendon at one of their last jaunts in England. The over-emphasis on echoed vocals and instrumentation is a definite minus. though it’s a sign of the material’s strength that it still stands up despite that fault. Tending towards a martial drum beat, with laconic voices clipping over the top, it gives the impression of determined energy, with a powerful line in emotive and dramatic catchphrases. ‘All Alone In Her Nirvana’ is a stand-out piece, though even this is drowned in a sea of echo. The first side is more successful although, as it consists of demo tracks and alternative versions of their songs, some of which are already available on record, the quality of sound again falls slightly. ‘Death Of The West’ is by far the most compelling piece, with an ethereal refrain of “We’re ruled by those who LIE!” creeping in at the end of the song with a nagging, insistent air. ‘All Alone In Her Nirvana’ crops up again, in a muted, almost dub form that shows DIJ’s capability of experimenting successfully outside the confines of the accepted ‘rock’ mode of working with sound. All in all, a powerful memory of a band in their first stage that promised more than they ever delivered and who hopefully will fulfil their potential and move away from the more obvious traps that dramatic imagery can offer.”

P.S. as a foot note to those who may be interested the live tracks on Burial were recorded and mixed by a certain Steve Stapleton of the post Agrarian group Nasties Will Win who claims only to have ever said “Hello” to me once on a tube train travelling on the Piccadilly line to Heathrow – as I helped him pick straw out of his hair, coat and trousers.

— You’re wrong to say the experimental aspect of ‘Black Radio’ is down to Patrick. In the Summer of 1983 I’d spent a month touring around what was then Yugoslavia and spent a lot of time in the car listening to the Talking Heads ‘Remain In Light’. Whilst sitting on the beach on the island of Rab, watching MIG fighters fly low overhead and an ugly looking fish apparently stalking my toes I had the music come into my head. Back in the studio in England I asked Pat to do a disco beat and Tony immediately started playing the bass line to my guitar stuff. It was one of those songs where the basics came together really quickly. I had the idea of throwing in the backward tapes and synth drum stuff to throw it off-beat and got the “Death tried to break Life’s chains…” lyrics from a Royal Air Force pilot’s grave in Brookwood cemetary early in the morning of the last day of recording that track. My main memory of Patrick during these recording sessions was his ever increasing disatisfaction with Tony’s contributions especially his vocals. Pat was either going to jump ship or Tony would be asked to leave. Tony was asked to leave. Heilige! Douglas P.

Riding to the first ever Death In June show on my BMW R65 through the snow covered streets of central London knowing that evening was going to be very important,…

…seeing the first guy ever in the audience to mimic me and to wear a certain camo uniform at a performance in Germany and finding out later he actually lived in the village of Dachau,….

…watching the huge flocks of crows/ravens forming what appeared to be black clouds in the sky above Warsaw at sunset as we walked from our hotel across the snow covered field to the Polish castle we would perform in,….

…noticing a falcon fly into its nest in a tower in the castle in Schmalkalden, Germany as I spoke with a Croatian fan and thinking of “the falcons of Zagreb.”,…

…scraping the ice off of the inside of the windows at the back of the tour bus and as the flakes floated around the inside of the cabin Boyd and I noticing an eagle descend onto a rabbit in the snow beside the road somewhere in Germany,…

…sitting outside a bar in Tel Aviv waiting for the sun to rise with a bourbon on the rocks in my hand and being suddenly presented with my mask which had earlier been stolen after the performance in Israel,..

…hearing the wounded soldiers and civilians crying at night in the streets around the hospital in Zagreb in 1992,…

hitting black ice at high speed at night on a road somewhere near Denver on the Tragical Misery Tour of 1997 and the whole of the van shouting “No, No, No,..” as it looked like we would smash into the vehicle in front. Luckily we didn’t!….

Climbing on the walls of the bunker we performed in in Brest and walking/crawling up through the undergrowth on the hills to peer out at the Atlantic….

…going to a famous beer cellar in Munich after being disappointed to find out that the Yule Market was closed that night, being presented with a very nice gift by a Croatian friend over some beer and Schnapps and upon return to the venue not being able to get back in because I’d forgotten my pass and no one believed who I was! Ah, the price anonymous fame.

I could go on and on, but there’s always a lot of snow. That’s Death In June weather….

There’s a whole range of things that sometimes creep into my mind about tours and performances but there’s none that I wish hadn’t happened. Even Switzerland had its photo opportunities and the look on the plain clothes police keeping a close watch on me in the venue in Lausanne as Boyd made his entrance on stage wearing my mask was something to behold. Had they been following the wrong guy all evening was a thought that definitely crossed their minds. — Thanks for that, albeit melancholy, information. Although I have no plans to record again in England if I did want to at least I knew Jacob’s was there.

However, as I turned 50 earlier this year Andy and Fran who ran the place must have been staring at 60 – perhaps even beyond – and I can’t blame them for wanting a change.

I wrote and recorded some of my very best material in Jacob’s and it did have a great atmosphere – a haunted one!

I wonder how the new owners will cope with that aspect? Evidently some groups couldn’t, cut short their time and that’s where I picked up the pieces at a hugely discounted rate.

Re: arthur lee has passed

— With the loss of Gene Pitney, Syd Barratt and now Arthur Lee 2006 continues its miserable march of attrition. All 3 in a variety of ways acted as great inspirations to me over the years. Certainly Gene Pitney’s song writing and interpretations were enviable and Kenneth Anger’s ‘Scorpio Rising’ would have been all the poorer without the classic scene featuring ‘He’s A Rebel’which he wrote. I saw him play several times over the past 10 + years and after a show in Adelaide in about 1995 I got some good advice from his group backstage – about how I was overpaying my own session musicians!

Stories about Syd Barratt were definitely amongst some of the reasons why I wanted to drop acid in the early 1970s and his guitar playing encouraged some of my early antics on electric guitar in DIJ.

What can I say about Arthur Lee/Love that I haven’t already? What would have happened if I had not listened to that tape of ‘Forever Changes’in 1983?

— The studio to the left of the main building was the one that most of ‘Symbols Shatter’ and ‘Rose Clouds’ were recorded in. Also the trumpet parts to ‘All Pigs Must Die’. It was a brilliant place to work in. There used to be a big large fibre glass shark out the back next to the swimming pool. I bet that’s not there now! — Actually there is a Death In June thread here besides the date of Death of Mrs. Ramsey In June, 200….6. And, besides the fact that when I heard a similar report on Australian TV a few days ago my ears did prick up when I heard the words “…death in June”.

His shrine to The Carpenters in his studio added to his curio factor and was dismantled soon after the attention from the extremely interested cops!

Mishima’s Sword

I highly recommend to members of this list the new book from Christopher Ross

‘Mishima’s Sword – Travels in Search of a Samurai Legend’.

It’s been published this year by Fourth Estate via Harper Collins.

A great read I finished last night which takes in Christopher’s early life in Southern England and his obsessions with martial arts and his hunt in 2000 for the actual sword that beheaded Yukio Mishima via transexual Kung Fu masters, helpful members of the Yakusa, illegal Pakistani immigrants in Tokyo (there’s no stopping those fellows, is there?)S&M clubs in Tokyo, where wearing either Red or White can make all the difference to your evening and the eventual outcome to his obsessive quest.

It makes me realise how lucky I was to have met who I did in 1989/90 in Tokyo as so many people have died in the meantime.

Buzzcocks – ‘Flat Pack Philosophy’

Still extremely cynical and sneerily enjoyable after all these years. If only Crisis could have supported them – despite the close calls at Guildford Civic Hall nearly 30 years ago. Hats off (again)to Pete Shelley and Steve Diggle.

Keane – ‘Hope And Fears’ and very recently ‘Under The Iron Sea’

A most impressive newish group. They came to me in a completely drunk moment in a hotel in Sydney earlier this year and I’ve been hooked – ‘straight’ or sober -since.

The Pet Shop Boys – ‘Fundamental’ ltd edition x 2 CDs

A true return to form which also hit me right between the ears during a soul searching time in a Sydney hotel. “Lunar Park’ indeed!

Morrissey – ‘Ring Leader Of The Tormentors’ ltd edition x 2 CDs

More out of loyalty than anything else. I hope he hasn’t turned into a Lou Reed character where you buy his albums in the constant hope for a glimpse of his past genius. But, all it ever is is a glimpse. Still, it’s better than nothing and that’s better than most, or nothing at all. Realistically, too rockist by far. He should ditch the crap rockabilly band that make King Kurt shine like the rare diamonds they were and just do an album with Ennio Morriccone arranging strings….and, perhaps me on guitar. Playing Em over and over again,…..oh the minimalist misery of the prospect of it all.

— I would have sworn blind that ‘Glad to be Gay’ was released in 1977-78 but regardless I always thought that Tom Robinson was a bit on the insipid side so I had no problem with being viewed as someone a little bit more, ahem, ‘butch’, Out and involved in the Punk/New Wave scene. Crisis’s first booking manager was a member of London’s gay underworld we fondly referred to as “zip face” due to the amount of knife wounds/scars he had. Some years later in the 1980s he was found floating face down in the Thames and I then learnt a lot more about his criminal convictions. Yes, a lot of what Tony and I wrote about was inspired from personal experience on demonstrations, at the workplace, as young trade unionists, living in London/the South East of England, me being gay, living with a much older guy and sexually experimenting etc and so on. Although I did draw the line at cleaning the shit out with my own hands! Even at The Roxy!!

— Australia began to inspire me as soon as I got off the plane way back in March, 1989. You can hear the immediate effect on the first track of the first album I recorded after that experience ‘Death Is The Martyr Of Beauty’ on 1992’s ‘But, What Ends When The Symbols Shatter?’ album. Those slightly distorted fluted sounds are Australian Magpies and a lot of the lyrics were inspired by an electrical storm I experienced walking along Sydney Harbour’s Circular Quay;

“In the Narcissism of the Harbour We are Lost….”

Each year Adelaide hosts some of the biggest ‘Ethnic’ festivals outside of their own home countries so if I am feeling a bit weepy for Europa I have the opportunity to see what are claimed to be some of the best Greek bouzouki balladeers at the Glendi, some of the stupidest clowns at the Italian Carnivale and some of the best marksmen at the German Schutzenfest.All the food, of course is great, washed down by lots of their traditional drinks. What more could I ask for? Beggars in the street? Oh, Sydney’s got plenty of those!

Recent Australian groups that have caught my attention are: The Tenth Stage, Black Cab, Bit By Bats, Spindickle, G.G. Alan Bindig, Raw Sex and Colostemy Bag Lady. But, Isomer, Beastianity, Strength Through Joy and Luke Ashby all hold a special place in my heart re. all things connected to Oz.

— “NADA!” certainly captures its Zeitgeist in 1984/85 and copies flew out of Rough Trade’s warehouse but it also invented quintessential Death In June such as the tracks She Said Destroy, Behind The Rose (Fields Of Rape), Leper Lord, The Honour Of Silence, C’est Un Reve, The Calling etc so it would be a mistake to ignore this unique album. I don’t know of any track from this recording that has been deemed an actual club hit but I do know that Come Before Christ And Murder Love, Little Black Angel and Fall Apart have and they’re from different albums! So,…..? “NADA!” still outsells albums such as But, What Ends When The Symbols Shatter? and Rose Clouds Of Holocaust most probably because it’s been around a lot longer and those years of sales will probably never be caught up on.
